Similarweb is a competitive-intelligence platform that estimates traffic, engagement, and marketing-channel data for any public website. Unlike Google Analytics, which measures your own site directly, Similarweb builds a model from panel data, partner signals, and machine learning to estimate what happens on sites you do not control.

This guide covers the four questions we see most often from teams evaluating the tool: What does it cost? What can the free version actually do? How does it differ from Google Analytics? And when should you choose something else?

1. What Similarweb Is and What It Measures

Founded in 2007 and publicly traded as SMWB, Similarweb is an Israeli data-analytics company that sells estimates of website traffic and audience behavior. Its core product, Web Intelligence, is sold in tiered plans for individuals and enterprises, with separate product lines for app, retail, sales, stock, and AI-search intelligence.

The platform answers three types of question:

  • Traffic estimates: How many visits, pages per visit, bounce rate, and average visit duration a site receives.
  • Channel breakdown: What share of traffic comes from organic search, paid search, social, referral, direct, and display.
  • Audience profile: Geographic distribution, device split, demographics, and audience overlap with competing brands.

The data is modelled, not measured. Similarweb's own knowledge centre describes the product as an "estimations tool" and states that it "does not expect its estimations to align exactly with your direct measurement data" (Similarweb Knowledge Center).

2. Pricing Plans (September 2026)

Similarweb publishes self-service prices on its website, but the default pricing tab shows no figures at all — only "Talk to sales." The actual numbers are hidden behind an "Entrepreneurs" toggle and rendered by JavaScript. Below are the verified figures as of September 2026.

Self-service plans ( Entrepreneurs tier )

Plan Annual billing Monthly billing Users Historical data What is included
Competitive Intelligence $125 / month $199 / month 1 3 months Website Performance, Traffic & Engagement, Customer Demographics, Marketing Channels Overview, Competitor Alerts
Competitive Intel & SEO & AEO $333 / month $399 / month 1 6 months Everything above, plus SEO Intelligence (Keyword Research, Rank Tracker, Site Audit, Backlinks) and AEO Intelligence (AI Brand Visibility, 150 tracked prompts, Sentiment Analysis, Citation Analysis, AI Traffic)
Competitive Intel, SEO & AEO & Ads $542 / month $649 / month 1 6 months Everything above, plus Ad Intelligence (Creative & Campaign Insights, Search/Display/Social Insights, Advertiser Demand Signals, Ad Spend)

Multiplied out annually: $1,500 for the entry plan, $3,996 for the middle tier, and $6,504 for the top self-service tier. Every self-service plan is limited to one user (Similarweb Web Intelligence Pricing).

AEO Intelligence standalone

A separate product line for AI-search visibility only:

Plan Annual billing Monthly billing Users Historical data What is included
AEO Intelligence $99 / month $129 / month 1 3 months AI Brand Visibility, 150 tracked prompts, Sentiment Analysis, Citation Analysis, AI Traffic for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google Gemini, Claude, Grok, and DeepSeek

Business and Enterprise plans

All advanced features — AI Studio, AI Agents, API access, data feeds into Snowflake and AWS, MCP server, custom dashboards, SSO, and dedicated support — are enterprise-only and quote-only. Similarweb publishes no pricing for these tiers (Similarweb Web Intelligence Pricing).

Billing quirks to know

  • You cannot switch to annual billing yourself. Similarweb's FAQ instructs you to email [email protected] and open a ticket (Similarweb Pricing FAQ).
  • Monthly billing on the entry plan costs 59% more than annual — a steeper penalty than the ~20% premium on higher tiers.
  • A 7-day free trial requires a credit card, limits you to 15 actions per day, and auto-converts to a paid plan unless you cancel first.

3. Free Plan Limits — What You Actually Get

There is no free plan for the Similarweb platform itself. What exists is a set of free public tools and sample data:

  • Website Traffic Checker: Estimated visits and engagement for any domain.
  • AI Traffic Checker: Estimated AI-search traffic from major generative engines.
  • Free Keyword Tool: Limited keyword-volume and SERP data.
  • SERP Seismograph: Search-result volatility tracking.
  • Free App Analytics: Mobile app performance estimates.
  • Browser extension: On-site traffic estimates while browsing.

These tools need no subscription. However, Similarweb's own pricing FAQ describes the free sample data on similarweb.com as "a very high-level taste" of the paid product (Similarweb Pricing FAQ). The data is shallow, cannot be exported, and lacks competitive benchmarking or historical trends.

Specific limitations of the free sample data

Feature Free tools Paid platform
Sites analysed per month Unlimited (one at a time) Unlimited, with bulk comparison
Keywords tracked Limited 1,000–unlimited depending on tier
Historical data None 3–37 months
Export / API None API is enterprise-only
Competitor benchmarking None Full side-by-side comparison
Geo / device filtering None Available on paid tiers
Real-time data No No — even paid data refreshes monthly

The free tools are useful for a quick sanity check on a single competitor. They are not a substitute for the paid platform if you need systematic competitive intelligence.

4. Similarweb vs Google Analytics — Key Differences

The two tools answer different questions. Google Analytics measures your own site's real traffic with first-party tracking. Similarweb estimates any site's traffic from a statistical panel and machine-learning models.

Core difference: measured vs estimated

Dimension Google Analytics (GA4) Similarweb
Data source First-party tracking code on your site Panel + ISP + ML modelling
Coverage Only your site Any public website
Accuracy for your site High (real events, subject to consent blocks) Modelled — directional, not exact
Competitor data None Full traffic and channel estimates
Update frequency Real-time Monthly (with weekly partials)
Cost Free Paid (self-service from $125/month)

A 2022 academic study by Jansen, Jung, and Salminen comparing Google Analytics and SimilarWeb across 86 websites found that SimilarWeb produced systematically conservative estimates relative to Google Analytics for total visits and unique visitors, with the gap remaining relatively constant across sites (PLoS ONE).

A larger 2026 study by Omniconvert of 1,787 eCommerce websites found SimilarWeb overreported sessions by roughly 94% — nearly double the real figure — with accuracy improving sharply for larger sites (Omniconvert). Time on site was the most reliable SimilarWeb metric; sessions were the least reliable.

Practical example

Imagine your site shows 220,000 monthly sessions in GA4. Similarweb might show 280,000. Both numbers can be "right" in their own frame: GA4 counts real sessions on your domain; Similarweb models total market traffic from a panel. The gap is not an error — it is a difference in methodology.

The rule is simple: Use Google Analytics for decisions about your own site. Use Similarweb for decisions about your market and competitors.

5. What Similarweb Cannot Do

Despite its breadth, Similarweb has clear limitations that are documented by the vendor itself:

It shows no data for small sites

Similarweb's knowledge centre states that when it estimates fewer than 5,000 visits for a period, it shows no numeric value. Sites with under 5,000 monthly desktop visits also have no desktop data displayed (Similarweb Knowledge Center).

Implication: If your competitive set includes niche B2B players, early-stage startups, or local businesses, run their domains through the free Website Traffic Checker before subscribing. A platform that returns "Not enough data" on half your list is not useful.

It is not real-time

Even on paid plans, data refreshes monthly with weekly partials. The most recent 4–6 weeks are always less reliable because the model needs time to stabilise (Exeleon Magazine).

It does not track conversions or revenue

Similarweb estimates traffic and engagement. It does not measure conversions, revenue, funnel events, or on-site goal completion. For that, you need GA4 or a dedicated conversion-analytics platform.

Self-service plans lack API access

The platform API is available only through Business and Enterprise packages or as a standalone purchase through sales. No self-service tier includes it. The only free API is a narrow DigitalRank endpoint capped at 100 data credits per month (Similarweb Developer Page).

Every self-service plan is one seat

You cannot add a second user to any published plan. Teams need either multiple individual subscriptions or an enterprise quote.

SEO features are thinner than specialists

At $333/month, the SEO & AEO bundle includes keyword research, rank tracking, site audit, and backlink tools. Semrush, Ahrefs, and SE Ranking match or exceed this depth for less money. The premium you pay is for the competitive-intelligence layer, not the SEO toolkit.

6. Who Should Use Which Plan

Use case Recommended plan Why
Occasional competitor checks (1–2 sites/month) Free tools only Sufficient for ad-hoc research
Regular competitor benchmarking, small team Competitive Intelligence ($125/month) Core traffic and channel data
SEO + AI-search visibility + competitor intel Competitive Intel & SEO & AEO ($333/month) Best value for marketers who need all three
Performance marketing + ad intel + SEO Competitive Intel, SEO & AEO & Ads ($542/month) Adds creative and campaign insights
AI-search visibility only AEO Intelligence ($99/month) If traffic intel is not needed
Enterprise: multiple users, API, custom data feeds Business / Enterprise (quote) Only tier with API, AI Studio, AI Agents, MCP

7. Verdict — Is Similarweb Worth It?

Yes, if competitive traffic intelligence is your core need.

Similarweb is the strongest tool available for estimating how much traffic a competitor gets and where it comes from. No SEO-first platform matches it for market sizing, share-of-traffic benchmarking, or audience-overlap analysis. At $125/month for the entry plan, it is cheap compared to the cost of guessing.

Or you can also try Kafkai which also gives you the competetive-intelligence data for much less money.

No, if your job is content SEO or rank tracking.

At $333/month, the SEO & AEO bundle is expensive relative to specialists. Semrush and Ahrefs give you more keyword depth, backlink data, and rank-tracking granularity for less money. You would be paying a large premium for traffic estimates you do not need.

The honest middle ground:

The $333 plan makes sense for a marketer who wants competitor traffic intelligence, a usable SEO suite, and AI-search visibility tracking in one subscription — provided one seat is enough. Treat the traffic numbers as directional, confirm anything critical against first-party data, and budget for the annual rate from day one.
